Joseph Anton Bruckner (1824 - 1896) was an Austrian composer and organist. Appreciated as a composer only late in life by his contemporaries, he was nevertheless one of the most important and innovative composers of his time, and his works exerted a great influence on the history of music well into the 20th century.
His 9 symphonies are famous. He also enriched church music with important works . As an organist he was admired for his improvisations.
The piano piece was composed on October 10, 1863, but was not published until 1930, long after his death. According to Prof. Dr. Walburga Litschauer, Mendelssohn's "Venetian Gondellied" op.30/6 was the model. The two compositions are similar in form, key and meter as well as in their lyrical mood.
