Johann Sebastian Bach: Preludium in a minor BWV 999

Johann Sebastian Bach
Preludium in a minor BWV 999

In times where the female disappears more and more, I want to illuminate with this short composition the goddess of love and beauty. At the time of the ancient Greece, the gods  have been associated with the elements of nature. Here are the birds which announce the goddess. She passes through space and time with a triple-rhythm - the divine figure. She is beautiful, proud, moody and very feminine. Never can the goddess neither capture nor comprehend. That is why I selected the form of the fantasy.

Karl Bickel (1927 - 1982) created the Paxmal within 25 years in solitude, under material and social deprivation, with great self-discipline. The peace monument is not a place of worship, but a quiet, peaceful place. The place lies high above the Walensee at the flanks of the Churfirsten.

Eugène Ysaÿe (1858 - 1931) was one of the greatest violinists of his time. After he had to end his career as a violin virtuoso due to health problems, he made himself a name as a composer and conductor. In 1923 he composed six solo sonatas, which have an important place in the violin literature.

"Obsession" is the second Solo Sonata – dedicated to Jacques Thibaud. However, only the first movement (Poco vivace) is suitable for the flute, because there is no double stopping in that part. Ysaÿe is obsessively engaged with Johann Sebastian Bach. The movement begins like the Prelude from the Partita in E major. The quotation, however, is changed immediately. Almost like a shock comes the venerable sequence from the Requiem Mass, the Dies irae. The music is full of passion and power.

The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor BWV 565 for organ are among the most famous works of Johann Sebastian Bach. The often unison melody, however, could mean that the work was originally planned for solo violin. One of the most fascinating things about the melodic instrument is to produce the impression of harmony by using the acoustics of the room. The arrangement by Jean-Claude Veilhan exploits the melodic range, fluency and many expressive possibilities of the flute to the full.

Pan and the birds

Despite his outstanding talent, Mouquet did not manage to stay in the spotlight. Like many composers of his time, he was intensely engaged with the Ancient Greece. The Sonata "La flute de Pan" fits well into this trend. It is very popular with flautists because of its three contrasting movements. "Pan et les oiseaux" is the lyrical, melancholic second movement.

Air Vaudois

Only reluctantly did the family allow their daughter to study at the Paris Conservatoire. Forced by her parents into a marriage with a 22-years-older industrialist, she had to take care of his five children. She herself brought three children into the world. The family circumstances allowed Mel to devote herself much more to composition from 1900 onwards. She then received several awards for her compositions.

Air Vaudois was written when she visited her son in an internment camp in Switzerland during the First World War.
