Saverio Mercadante was very successful during his lifetime. For a time he was the most important composer in Italy and was considered the forerunner of Giuseppe Verdi. (He wrote over 30 operas)
His Flute Concerto No. 2 in E minor belongs in the repertoire of every flutist. Also very popular are his early flute quartets.
In 1862 he became almost completely blind, but continued to compose by dictation.
