Peter Mieg, the composer

Peter Mieg can be described as a lyrical chamber musician. Through Paul Sacher he got to know many important contemporary composers, including Igor Stravinsky, Arthur Honegger, Frank Martin and Bohuslav Martinů. Frank Martin had a lasting influence on him. The two artists worked together sporadically. Despite his intensive study of the Viennese school and the theory of dodecaphonics, he had a preference for the traditional, classical sonata form. He came to the realization that this can be used as a constructive technique without having to leave tonality. He only wanted to compose what he really liked, even if that was the hardest part. What is striking is the preference for the flute in his compositions.

Peter Mieg: "If I don't write completely subjectively and personally, it has no value at all."

Peter Mieg, the painter

The first exhibition took place in 1939 in the Kunsthalle Basel. However, because of the outbreak of war, it remained unanswered. Mieg needed a few hours for a picture and months for a composition. He preferred watercolors - a composition full of light and air. In 1961 an exhibition took place in the Lenzburg town hall gallery. Mieg was full of doubts. However, the exhibition was a great success, encouraging Mieg to continue painting. His paintings are full of light, life and colour.
