Mercadante's catalog of works includes 60 operas and a wealth of sacred and instrumental works. He was highly regarded by many contemporary composers and was very successful. His operas were performed throughout Italy and abroad, often years after their premiere.
However, his particular interest was increasingly in instrumental and chamber music. Over time he developed his own musical language that combines the joy of lyricism with the pleasure of instrumental virtuosity.
