Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856)
3 Romances op. 94
Robert Schumann composed the three Romances, op. 94, in Düsseldorf in December 1849. They belong to a series of chamber music pieces for wind instruments that Schumann wrote in his late creative phase. The Romances reflect Schumann's lyrical and emotional side and are considered one of his most important works.
The Romances were originally written for oboe and piano. However, versions for violin, clarinet and flute also exist, which has increased the popularity of the work.
The opus consists of three movements:
Not fast
Simple, heartfelt
Not fast
Each movement has its own character, whereby the emotional depth, the lyrical melodies and the intimate relationship between the two instruments are particularly striking. The movements are characterised by a melancholy mood and an intimate dialogue between the instruments.
Schumann dedicated this work to his wife Clara.
